MTI Arts International Inc. Objectives

MTI in Swahili “mti” means a tree. A tree is symbol of life. And it also watches of us with its artistic branches and leaves. It may provide shade from a burning sun but also bring rain (water) for life. MTI Arts International provides programs for people of all ages by bringing music and other art forms to schools, healthcare facilities, and other institutions both nationally and internationally. As a creative organization MTI delves into new artistic territory as it explores ways to deliver its programs for the purpose of creating happiness and joy for all. The organization offers an array of programs including art in education and arts in wellness programs, training, research and theratainment while focusing on the arts as a healing too. The word theratainment refers to an activity that is capable of diverting and holding the attention while at the same time providing care by remedial attributes (Akombo, 2006).

The needs being addressed:
Music can be a major factor in the reduction of stress and the development of positive self-concept. The effects of stress on children have become a national concern. A wide range of emotional, stress-related problems such as teenage suicide, teenage pregnancies, delinquent children, violence In school and in the home, physical and sexual abuse of children, and drug trafficking among youth have featured in recent news-media coverage. Crimes committed by children, even murder, are increasing. Mental health professionals and parents have witnessed a dramatic 25% increase in the numbers of reported cases of seriously emotionally disturbed children in the last 10 years. Misbehavior in schools is pervasive, and parents are concerned for their children's safety while they are there. A music program such as that provided by MTI Arts International designed to meet the child's needs, combined with a social training program of coping and building self-esteem, could change this child's tendency to different behavioral conditions such as hyperactivity, aggression, or withdrawal in these children.
