MTI Arts International (MTI) has continued to provide community programs to children and adults throughout the
United States. Recently, programs were provided in New York Schools. These were St. Athanasius School and the
Immaculate Conception School both in the Bronx area of the greater New York. With the support of MTI Volunteer musicians,
the presentation started with Dr. Akombo and his team giving a performance of Kenyan traditional music.
The Songs ranged from birthday songs, singing games, to story songs. Then Dr. Akombo taught the children some basic
Swahili words which were followed by Swahili songs. Mr. Akombo then taught the children how to play the drum
patterns and the sticks as they sang the Swahili songs. This then was followed by a dance session. Led by a world renown dancer
Peace Elewonu from Ghana, master drummer Isaac Manheimer Dr. Akombo asked a few volunteers to come forward and
learn the Ghanaian dance rhythms while the rest of the children drummed the patterns and sang. At the end of the presentation,
the children were engaged in a drum circle where Dr. Akombo and Mr. Manheimer led the patterns as they followed.
